"Far from the madding crowd .. but only ten minutes from the M6..." |

All the old estate lands including the Lake have passed into the ownership of English Nature and now form part of the Gait Barrows Nature Reserve. Half a mile down the valley is the internationally important bird sanctuary, Leighton Moss Nature Reserve. Conveniently situated on the edge of the Lake District, Challan Hall is also handy for the Yorkshire Moors, the forest of Bowland, the Lune Valley and is only a mile or so from the shores of Morecambe Bay. Windermere and its surrounds are only a 25 minute drive away. The local area tends to be something of a sleepy backwater, having always been by-passed by main routes both in modern times and in the past. As a result, it is mercifully free of the crowds and traffic now all too familiar in the main holiday areas.
